21st Century Program

Beatrice Caffrey 21st Century’s program goal is to support and enhance the
academic, social and learning goals of the students enrolled in the schools that we
partner with. Administrators, teachers, parents and BCYS
staff work together in
collaboration to decide upon the classes that would provide the students in a fun way
to increase academic achievement, social development, decrease such behavior as in
and out of school detentions and suspensions.

One of the problems that are being felt by society at large is the issues of
childhood obesity, which has and is creating serious physical health issues as well as
emotional issues. Both of these have affected our children. In an effort to assist
our children the nutrition program was developed.

The
Nutrition Program is designed to educate and inform about nutrition in a fun,
hands on way. Students are taught how to make better food choice, choose foods
with less fat and sugars, and how to read labels. They learn about food groups, the
importance of the food they choose in creating healthy bodies, balanced emotions.
They learn the effect that certain foods have on their ability to sit still,
concentrate and focus. With the current challenges our children face today with
obesity, diabetics, attention deficient disorder just to name a few, it is important
that our children are taught early to make good food choice.

Right of Passage Girls
Program is a structured year long support group that is
designed to foster self esteem, counter self doubt, and allow genuine self expression
through verbal sharing and creative activity. The girls express the
mselves through
creativity or focused activities such as role playing, drama, journaling, poetry,
movement drawing, and collage. Some of the themes explored are: being a girl,
friendships, body images, goals, competitions and decision making.

Drop in Counseling is a valuable tool for the administration to take advantage of for
the following reason:

  • Provides additional support for the counseling department at the school
  • Enables parents/guardians, teachers and students to enhance their relationships
  • Allows a neutral professional person to facilitate conflict resolution
  • Helps parents/guardians and students to develop a supportive relationship
  • Provides parents/guardians a safe arena to discuss areas that they may need
    assistance
  • Provides students a safe environment to discuss areas of concern regarding
    subjects where they may need
  • Helps students develop a more positive way of communication
  • Helps students develop social skills, peer relationship skills and study skills
    etc...
